So, I hate that even on a great dictionary like wiktionary.com the etymology you get for some words like everything is something like this: “every + thing”. I mean, really, thanks. I totally couldn’t have figured that out on my own.
Like, I’m interested in knowing when exactly this word began to be used as a noun (for those of you who know German, alles (albeit in different inflected forms, and which shares a root with the English all), can be a noun OR adjective.
In English, we use all as an adjective or pronoun, but everything never becomes an adjective. So, like, when the heck did that start?
